Okay, now before anyone says anything, I realize the main Shaxpir page has a support section for posting new feature requests. But I’m thinking that the people who frequent the community site are more dedicated Shaxpir users than those who use the main site. And when you see what I’m proposing below you’ll understand why this suggestion has as much to do with you as it does me.
So we all know writing is difficult. For me, a lot of this comes from the isolation of the craft. I write alone. I have to. I can’t stand the distractions of other people looking over my shoulder. But this also makes keeping at it very difficult - I don’t have a community of writers to talk to, to be encouraged by, to act as both sounding board and cheering section. And that’s unfortunate, because I’ve found that when I’m in a rut sometimes the simple act of discussing writing with a fellow wordsmith (you know who you are) is enough to rekindle my own passion for writing. To get me back in the game, so to speak.
Shaxpir is in a unique position to breach this gap. Consider the linguistics section. It doesn’t just give you a breakdown of your total words, vividness, passive voice, etc… It tells you which percentile in the Shaxpir book library your book falls into. Which means it’s aware of your book versus everyone else’s.
Also, consider that in all but the current version of the program you were greeted with a historical timeline bar graph, showing you what days you wrote a lot, a little, etc… It was a nice way to see your ongoing progress.
So why not put those two together with a twist? Why not show me the total Shaxpir word count increase for the day, along with what I personally contributed to that count? Maybe across all Shaxpir authors 25,000 words were written today, and I was responsible for 500 of those words.
Better yet, allow us to categorize our individual books into genres within the application. Then, show us the progress on those fronts. Maybe the Science Fiction & Fantasy category increased by 5,000 words today, and while I wasn’t responsible for any of those, I may have contributed 1,000 words toward the Supernatural Drama category.
Package these stats up in some prominent graphs that pop up when you log in and suddenly you feel like you’re part of something. And that becomes a reminder to you that you’re not in it alone. And that becomes an encouragement.
Anyway, that’s the idea. I am honestly curious to see what your thoughts are, so please feel free to post back. I’m also leaving this in the ‘Uncategorized’ section because I don’t know where Benji wants it. And I can certainly post it to the main Shaxpir support site, but again, I think the feedback here in the community site will be much more worthwhile.
